Kyoto
Otoyo Shrine is a Shinto shrine with origins dating back to the early Heian period. It was established in the year 887 by an imperial maid who prayed there for Emperor Uda to recover from a serious illness. It is tucked away just off the famous Philosopher’s Path, known locally as Tetsugaku No Michi. The shrine is famous for its unique animal guardians that tie deeply into Japanese mythology, such as the guardian mice and other sacred animals (you will find stone statues of monkeys, a hawk, and snakes, which are ancient symbols of regeneration).
