Shrine

Naha, Okinawa

Naminoue Shrine, established as a Shinto shrine in 1890, is one of Okinawa’s most iconic shrines, located on a cliff overlooking the sea in Naha. Its name means “above the waves”, and the location has been a sacred place since Ryukyu Kingdom times, when it was the kingdom’s protector shrine. Sailors once prayed here for safe voyages.

The bright Okinawan-style architecture, sea breeze, and coastal views give it a unique atmosphere you won’t find at shrines on the mainland.
