Kashimamiko Shrine
鹿島御児神社
Shrine
Ishinomaki, Miyagi
Kashimamiko Shrine in Ishinomaki, sitting on a hill close to the sea, has a long history of protecting the area’s fishermen and seafarers. It’s also known for surviving major disasters, including tsunamis, and has become a symbol of resilience for the local community.
The shrine was significantly affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and underwent major restoration afterward. Because of its elevation and clear view, Hiyoriyama Park (and the shrine’s front area) served as an evacuation point during the tsunami. Today, the view and the presence of markers and memorial features in the park remind people of the scale of the disaster.
