Iwashimizu Hachimangu
石清水八幡宮

Shrine

Yawata, Kyoto

Iwashimizu Hachimangu, founded in 859, sits on the forested slopes of Mount Otokoyama. It was one of the guardian shrines of the old capital. One of its most unexpected facts is its connection to Thomas Edison. He used bamboo from Mount Otokoyama for the filament in his early successful light bulbs. Because of that, the shrine has a memorial to Edison, making it one of the few Shinto sites linked to modern invention.
