Shrine
Itsukushima, Hiroshima
Itsukushima Shrine, first established in the 6th century, is well-known for its “floating” appearance at high tide. Built over the water on wooden stilts, it creates the illusion that the main buildings and boardwalks drift with the sea. Its most iconic feature is the giant vermilion torii gate, which stands offshore and seems to rise out of the bay. The whole setting has made it one of the most photogenic sacred sites in Japan.
