Shrine

Sakyo-ku, Kyoto

Heian Shrine is one of Kyoto’s most famous sights, built in 1895 for the city’s 1,100th birthday as a scaled-down recreation of the old Heian-period Imperial Palace. Its huge orange torii gate, located over the road outside, is a landmark by itself. The shrine grounds feature a wide courtyard enclosed by vermilion buildings and green roofs. There is also a largegarden with ponds, stepping stones, and seasonal flowers.
