Chomeiji
長命寺

Temple

Omihachiman, Shiga

Chomeiji in Omihachiman, founded in the late 7th century, is a historic Tendai temple located on a forested hillside overlooking Lake Biwa. It’s reached by a long stone stairway with 808 steps. There is also a 3-story red pagoda on the temple grounds. The name of the temple comes from a legend that drinking water from the temple’s spring cured the emperor’s illness, leading to the association with long life and as such, the temple is known for its connection to longevity.
