Uji, Kyoto

The Phoenix Hall at Byodoin in Uji is a 11th-century building known for its unique wing-like design that resembles a phoenix in flight. It was originally built as a villa for the Fujiwara clan and later converted into a temple hall housing a seated Amida Buddha. It sits beside a reflective pond and is one of Japan’s most iconic pieces of architecture, also featured on the 10-yen coin.
