Byodoin (Amida Buddha)
平等院 (阿弥陀如来)
Temple
Uji, Kyoto
The Amida Buddha at Byodoin is a 11th-century wooden statue created by the master sculptor Jocho. Carved from joined wood blocks, it has a calm, gentle expression and sits at the center of the Phoenix Hall, surrounded by small heavenly bodhisattvas on clouds. Its style became the model for later Buddhist sculpture, and it’s considered one of the finest representations of Amida in Japan.
